We are so excited to announce that we are preparing to make a short film of the Herne Hill Station song-poem by Francesca Beard and John Hegley! Merging the already complementary forms of poetry and music, film seemed a suitable companion for the next stage of Come On In’s own life journey. Beyond a stand-in for a tour that cannot be (right now) this short film will be a creative exploration in storytelling itself – and with it we hope to reach those who may find live performances inaccessible or may not have been able to see the original performances.
We are so happy to be working with filmmaker Ruth Grimberg who specialises in documentary filmmaking and photography. Ruth’s films focus on people and their voices, so she is a wonderful fit with StrongBack and our core values. We are grateful to be again working with Speaking Volumes and Herne Hill Station staff members Sharon Jeffrey and Owen Felix. This project would not be possible without a grant from Lambeth’s Arts and Culture At Risk. All we can say for now is watch this space!
What we (will) be watching: at 7pm 31st Aug “Inward Hunger: The Story of Eric Williams” a screening and a panel coinciding with Trinidad and Tobago’s Independence anniversary on the same day. This is part of the excellent Windrush Carribean Film Festival
What we’ve been reading: Derek Walcott’s poetry, perhaps an obvious start! His entire works are available online via Scribd (which offers a 30 day free trial) we will try to have some new reading recommendations next month but…
What we’ve been listening too: BBC Radio 3 now has a series created over lockdown, Postcards from Composers. Our very own AD, Dominique’s musical postcard will be broadcast on Friday 4th September on R3 breakfast around 8.30 am, after the Afternoon concert at 14.00pm and after the evening concert going up to 22.00.
